Research area & expertise:

Dr Carmen Rial is a fulltime professor at the Department of Anthropology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil). She taught at several Brazilian, Portuguese; French and Spanish Universities, and has been visiting researcher at the Universities of Cadiz, Madrid, and at Berkeley. She is the director of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology, vice editor of the journal Vibrant (Virtual Brazilian Anthropology, and co-editor of the interview section of the Brazilian Journal of Feminist Studies (Revista de Estudos Feministas). She has published on visual anthropology, cultural globalization, media studies and anthropology of sport, and recently an award-winning article on Brazilian football migrants. Before, she had been honored with the Pierre Verger Award Price for her contribution to the History of Anthropology with “Mauss, seen by his female students” (2002).
Her research areas are on Urban Anthropology and Globalization. She has published on visual anthropology, cultural globalization, anthropology of food, media studies and anthropology of sport.

Her current research interest lies in Brazilian football migration (men and women). Current funded projects:
