We have come to our conclusion regarding the major importance of football amongst the Portuguese communities abroad based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative material. First observations had been realized during the EURO 2004 tournament in Portugal and the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. Former experiences of our researchers in Maputo, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, London, Northern Germany and New England allow basing the current work on the role of football on ethnographic fieldwork which had been carried out/started partly prior to the project. These experiences gave birth to the idea of analyzing scientifically the role of football in the construction of an image, under the perspective of constructing a representation of “modern” Portugal among Portuguese community abroad.

While EURO 2008 was taking place in Austria and Switzerland, our research team was collecting data in Maputo, London (Stockwell), Paris and Geneva from fans of the Portuguese national team. Besides this, a survey was conducted at the Portuguese association in Hess. Oldendorf/Germany. Some basic comparative results from the two localities of research are represented in the illustrated data files; participant observations, as well as biographical interviews, have been conducted. In order to assure the privacy of our interviewees, only few examples of our anonymous quantitative data is published here.

The country reports provide a brief introduction of the situation in the different research localities by introducing basic information on the migration history, socio-economic background, settlement and daily life of Portuguese emigrants and luso-descendents in quite different historical contexts. They built the point of departure for conceptual debates among the research team by opening questions on collective subjectivities and self-perceptions among luso-communities in different countries and socio-historical settings (see Workshops and Publications of the Research Team).
